Diary of an Indie Hacker — Entry 11: The app learned to send email

Day eleven: notifications go out, a real job queue replaces blocking requests, and subtitles finally works end to end.

Originally written November 16, 2025

Today the app learned to talk back. Email notifications now go out when clips, subtitles, or reframes finish — no more leaving a tab open and hoping. Then, true to form, we immediately had to disable them to get the API running again. Progress is rarely linear.

The bigger win was architectural: subtitle exports moved to a real job queue instead of blocking the request, and captioned videos now get cached instead of regenerated from scratch every time. Nobody sees these changes. Everybody feels them.

And buried under all that plumbing: AI Subtitles finally works end to end — upload a file or paste a link, and the whole flow completes. It took a full day of fighting polling bugs, cache headers, and button states to get there. The boring bugs are the ones that keep users.

Next entry: we tore down the entire UI and rebuilt it in a day.
