Diary of an Indie Hacker — Entry 4: Renaming things is admitting what they are

Day four: "Pro Clips" becomes "Smart Clips," a day of quality tuning, and a UI lesson borrowed from the competition.

We renamed our flagship feature today. "Pro Clips" became "Smart Clips" — which sounds like marketing, but it was really about honesty. "Pro" described who we imagined using it. "Smart" describes what it actually does.

The rest of the day was quality tuning, which is a polite word for an argument with a machine that keeps disagreeing with you. Auto-generate on load, tighten the padding, kill the duplicates, enforce a minimum clip length because 8-second clips are not clips, they're accidents.

We also shipped aspect-ratio conversion with smart cropping — the UI borrowed shamelessly from a clip tool everyone in this space gets compared to. When your competitor has already spent a million dollars teaching users what the interface should look like, you don't reinvent it. You take the lesson and move on.

Started the caption system too — the foundation for what would become the thing users screenshot and share. We didn't know that yet. Today it was just a service and a prayer.

Next entry: viral caption styles, and the day the server ran out of memory repeatedly.
