Diary of an Indie Hacker — Entry 9: Nobody remembers a consistent UI, everyone notices an inconsistent one

Day nine: animated captions in exports, and paying down the "every feature invents its own UI" debt.

Originally written November 14, 2025

Yesterday the captions appeared on screen. Today they learned to move — AI Subtitles downloads now use the animated caption pipeline, so the exported file has the same bounce and emphasis you saw in the preview. Preview and download finally match, which sounds obvious and apparently wasn't.

The rest of the day was UI parity: making Reframe and Subtitles look and behave like the Clips export flow. Same buttons in the same places, same download behavior, same everything. No user will ever congratulate us for this. But every user who didn't get confused by a button being in a different place owes this day a small debt.

There's a lesson in here about why "ship fast" and "consistent UX" fight each other: every feature we add gets its own slightly different take on the same flow, and then we pay it back in days like this. We've since learned to build the pattern first and the feature second — but on Nov 14 we were still learning that the expensive way.

Next entry: customization arrives — colors, fonts, and the watermark that made the free tier possible.
